What started as an idea for a little cookout in Fort Valley may become one of the biggest and most talked about events in middle Georgia. Just goes to show the power of barbecue.

The first Hambone Jam on June 16-17, 2006, was conceived as a small barbecue cookoff in downtown Fort Valley for local backyard grillers to have some fun. The response to the contest was phenomenal. Twenty teams from around the region registered to cook and 17 actually entered the contest.

Several "Memphis in May" certified judges from Peach, Taylor and Houston Counties agreed to judge the meat and sauce. First place winner was Barbecue Monsters of Perry; second place went to G’s Specialty of Fort Valley; and third place meat and first place sauce winners were Sam Meyer and Bryant Culpepper of Fort Valley.

Fort Valley Main Street/Downtown Development Authority provided the meat for the first year’s contest, so after all the meat had been judged, a team of volunteers made and served approximately 300 sandwiches to the public. The inaugural Hambone Jam was one of the most successful events ever staged in downtown Fort Valley.

The second Annual Hambone Jam, September 7-8, 2007, was the first event sanctioned by the Georgia Barbecue Association and was considered a resounding success.
